What’s It Like to Photograph an EV Launch at a Car Dealership?

Most dealership shoots are simple: clean shots of cars in the showroom, maybe a quick walkaround outside. But when BYD South West launched the new BYD Dolphin, they wanted something more — a full visual record of the day that captured not just the car, but the energy of the event itself.

As an automotive photographer based in Devon, I was asked to document the launch at their dealership, creating a set of images for web, social, and future marketing.

Photographing a Live Car Launch: The Setup

This shoot took place at BYD South West’s dealership, where the Dolphin was introduced to customers and guests for the first time. The brief was clear:

Capture the atmosphere of the launch and the car itself.

Unlike a controlled studio shoot, this involved working in a live environment with real lighting, real conversations, and real-time moments. That’s where the challenge — and value — comes in.

Shooting Approach

My focus was on keeping the images clean, professional, and usable across formats — from websites to press releases and social posts.

Key areas I focused on:
