What kit do I use?
When it comes to automotive photography and videography, having the right kit is essential for capturing high-quality, professional content. Whether I’m photographing cars in motion, shooting detailed close-ups, or creating cinematic video footage, my gear allows me to achieve the results I’m after. In this post, I’ll share the key equipment I rely on for both photography and video work, and how each piece contributes to my process.
1. Camera: Canon R6
The Canon R6 is the foundation of my photography setup. Its 20.1-megapixel full-frame sensor delivers excellent image quality, capturing sharp, detailed photos in various lighting conditions. The fast autofocus and in-body stabilisation ensure smooth, blur-free images, even when the car is moving. Its dynamic range is particularly useful for automotive photography, where I need to capture both the shadows and highlights of the vehicle’s design.
2. Lenses: Versatile and High-Quality
My lens choices allow me to adapt to different scenarios, whether I’m shooting wide-angle landscapes or close-up details of a car:
- Sigma 28mm f/1.4 Art Lens: This wide-angle prime lens is perfect for capturing dramatic shots of cars in their environment. With an aperture of f/1.4, it performs exceptionally well in low-light situations and creates beautiful background blur, helping the car stand out in the shot.
-Canon 17-40mm f/4 L Lens: For more versatility, I turn to the Canon 17-40mm. The wide-angle capability allows me to capture sweeping views of the car in its surroundings, while the zoom function helps bring out details without distorting the image. Its constant f/4 aperture works well in most lighting conditions, making it an excellent all-around lens for automotive photography.
3. Tripod: K&F Concept 72"/184cm Camera Tripod
Stability is key for both photography and videography, which is why I rely on the K&F Concept 72"/184cm Camera Tripod. Whether I’m doing long exposure photography or panning for a smooth video shot, this tripod provides the stability I need. It’s lightweight enough for portability but sturdy enough to support my gear in various environments.
4. Lighting: Luceco Work Light and Neewer Vision 4 Flash
Lighting plays a crucial role in highlighting the unique features of each car, whether I’m shooting in daylight or at night:
- Luceco Inspection Work Bar Light: This light bar is versatile, allowing me to control how the light spreads across the vehicle. It’s perfect for highlighting details like the car’s body lines or wheel arches, especially during evening or indoor shoots. Whilst this light is not a dedicated photography light, this has served me well over the years as a high value for money alternative.
- Neewer Vision 4 Flash: For more focused lighting, I use the Neewer Vision 4 flash. It’s wireless, which gives me flexibility during shoots, and powerful enough to illuminate key areas of the car. The flash is great for filling shadows or creating a striking, high-contrast look.
Video Gear:
DJI Ronin M, Neewer F400 Pro Monitor, and Rode Microphone
For video shoots, capturing smooth, cinematic footage is essential, and that’s where my DJI Ronin M stabilizer comes in. It allows me to shoot fluid motion shots, whether I’m following a car or getting creative with dynamic angles. The Neewer F400 Pro monitor helps me frame my shots precisely, ensuring everything is in focus and well-composed, while the Rode microphone ensures high-quality audio to match the visuals, perfect for interviews or capturing the sound of the cars in action.
Every piece of gear in my kit plays an important role in how I approach both automotive photography and videography. Whether it’s the versatility of the Canon R6 and my selection of lenses, the stability from my K&F tripod, or the creative lighting setups I achieve with the Luceco Work Light and Neewer Vision 4 Flash, this gear helps me capture the best possible images. For video work, the DJI Ronin M ensures smooth, professional footage, while the Neewer F400 Pro monitor and Rode microphone help elevate the production quality.
